Computer Maintenance After Midnight

If you follow my Twitter you’ll soon figure out that my days begin and end freakishly early since I teach school. Since today is Martin Luther King Day and there’s no school, I decided to stay up and do some work on my computer.

Last month, my beloved 15-inch Macbook Pro, “Boyfriend” started having kernel panics and shutting down whenever I played Warcraft. So, I got a shiny, pretty new 13-inch Macbook Pro that I now call Hamilton. He’s beautiful and lovely and until last night, had no files on him from my previous system.

So, I started my data transfer and promptly screwed up my iTunes library. I am the worst ex-Apple employee ever. I ended up having 10GB of duplicated music files and needed to figure out a fast way to get rid of these duplicate files.

Enter, my hero, Dupin which helped me delete the unwanted files by just unchecking some ticky boxes. After about an hour of deleting and listening to an audiobook, it occurred to me that I was forgetting to purge the freaking files from the folder. Once I realized my mistake, I deleted the remaining files using Dupin, and then started searching for a way to seek out the files still left in iTunes.

I ended up using Araxis’ Find Duplicate Files which allowed me to specifically find and delete the unwanted iTunes files. It’s only a trial version, lasting seven days, but it looks like it might be worth buying. I am also planning on trying out Hazel which performs a pretty similar function, but might be a tiny bit prettier than the Araxis software.

Overall, the entire fiasco only cost me like an hour of messing around, but I clearly shouldn’t do any sort of computer work after my bedtime.
